The Chief Executive for Australia’s first ever National Rail Safety Regulator is to be chosen from an international field, according to a joint statement from the Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Patrick Conlon and Federal Minister Anthony Albanese.
Mr Conlon said that following an agreement by all Australian Governments, Australia would have one National Rail Safety Regulator from January 2013, based in Adelaide.

“The Regulator will facilitate the seamless and safe operation of rail transport and promote rail safety and safety improvement across the country,” the Ministers said.
“The person selected will have an opportunity to create and shape national independent regulation which will deliver major economic benefits for the rail industry in Australia.”
They said that with the Australian transport sector representing around five per cent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product and directly employing approximately half a million Australians, it was vital that duplication and misalignment in the sector be removed.
“The National Rail Safety Regulator delivers on a key reform to the transport sector to improve safety and simplify the compliance task for transport operators,” they said.
“The rail reforms are expected to create national benefits of up to $73 million over 10 years.”
Mr Albanese said that for the first time in Australia’s history the nation was well on the way to delivering national laws and single national regulators for the maritime, rail and heavy vehicle sectors.
