Directions paper
points to India

A new directions paper exploring economic opportunities with India has been released for public input.
The directions paper will lead consultation with businesses, industry, trade organisations and Government Agencies as it seeks ideas for furthering South Australia’s ties with the Asian giant.
Premier, Jay Weatherill said India was expected to become the world’s third-largest economy within 20 years and was going to play a significant part in South Australia’s long-term economic growth.
“It’s important that South Australia has a clear strategy to take advantage of emerging opportunities that exist in India and that’s what this consultation with business and industry will develop,” Mr Weatherill said.
Closer links proposed
“While our trade, education and cultural ties provide a strong foundation, we need a more broadly-based alliance across many sectors of our State’s economy.”
Minister for Manufacturing, Industry and Trade, Tom Koutsantonis said Indian investors, business operators, skilled migrants, students and tourists were already discovering opportunities in South Australia with India the State’s fourth largest export market.
“The broad consultation to be conducted in coming weeks will continue the process of linking South Australia’s economic expansion to the exponential growth forecast for India,” Mr Koutsantonis said.
“The final economic engagement strategy for India will align business and Government activity to benefit both South Australian and Indian people.”
He said SA’s strategy would include a clear set of targets and aims for trade, investment and business migration – identifying how the relationship would develop in coming years.
He said the South Australia-India Economic Development Directions Paper could be accessed at this PS News link, as could information on submitting ideas and feedback.
